Hedgehogs and Marsupials

The African pygmy hedgehog is the most common hedgehog species we see here. However we also regularly see the native European hedgehog and less frequently other species such as the Algerian, the long eared Egyptian and the Ethiopian hedgehogs. These are a unique group of mammals belonging to the group of mammals called the Insectivora. This group is the most primitive of all living mammals today. Their unique physiology and behaviour have a major effect on the approach to medical care required by these unique animals. Tenrecs are closely related to hedgehogs and require a very similar medical approach.
